What is Fisetin?

Fisetin is an antioxidant compound in the flavonoid family. Flavonoids are compounds found in food sources and have been receiving a lot of interest as therapeutic agents. Fisetin is naturally found in various fruits and vegetables, such as strawberry, apple, persimmon, grape, onion, and cucumber. Fisetin has been demonstrated to have healthy aging effects!

 

Healthy Cells:

The molecular structure of fisetin (3,3′,4′,7-tetrahydroxyflavone) has been analyzed chemically to show a high antioxidant capacity. This means the compound can target and reduce harmful free radicals in our cells.

 

Free radicals are a natural byproduct of normal cellular functions and can be thought of as bulls in a china shop. A free radical is an unstable molecule in the cell that desperately needs an electron to reach stability.

 

A molecule with a free radical will steal an electron from a neighboring molecule and that victim molecule will be frantic and dysfunctional until it is able to steal an electron from a third molecule. It is like a vicious game of electron stealing tag that will disrupt numerous molecules and cause cells to be out of balance and release inflammatory signals that amplify this response.

This oxidative damage contributes to many chronic diseases and accelerates aging. You can think of antioxidants as peacemakers that are able to take free radicals and hold onto them without destroying their surroundings, ending the tag game.

Fisetin increases glutathione levels. Glutathione is an antioxidant produced by our cells and very important to overall health.

Fisetin also increases the activity of NRF2 (nuclear factor erythroid factor 2). NFR2 is typically activated when the cell is injured or inflamed and works to reduce oxidative damage. NRF2 is a transcription factor for antioxidant proteins. Activated transcription factors enter the nucleus of a cell, bind to the DNA of the cell at a particular location, and call for cellular machinery to come over and transcribe this section of the DNA. That DNA is transcribed into RNA which the cell then turns into new proteins with specific cellular functions. NRF2 targets over 200 proteins that have antioxidative functions and run around the cell stopping free radical tag and decreasing oxidative damage.  

 

Senescent Cells:

Before cells divide, there is a delicate system of checks and balances that make sure the DNA is not damaged, the cell is functioning properly, and the cell has resources to duplicate correctly. If DNA damage is detected, the cell will be stopped from duplicating and will often be killed off and recycled through the process of apoptosis (programmed cell death).

Senescent cells are cells that have been able to bypass typical mechanisms that stop cells from growing and dividing, acquiring DNA damage and not functioning properly.

Fisetin can inhibit a protein called AKT which is involved in many processes, including cell growth and division.

Overly active AKT will push cells to divide and will inhibit normal apoptosis. Fisetin has been shown to help regulate AKT proteins.
