What is CoQ10?

Coenzyme Q10, also known as ubiquinone, ubidecarenone, coenzyme Q, and abbreviated at times to CoQ10, CoQ, or Q10 is a natural antioxidant synthesized by the body. In general, coenzymes support enzymes in their various biochemical functions. CoQ10 is present in most eukaryotic cells, primarily in mitochondria, and is a vital participant in the chain of metabolic chemical reactions (electron transport chain) that generate energy in the form of ATP within cells. Ninety-five percent of the human body’s energy is generated this way. Therefore, those organs with the highest energy requirements—such as the heart, liver, and kidney—have the highest CoQ10 concentrations.[1]*

Why take CoQ10 supplements?

Primary dietary sources of CoQ10 include oily fish (such as salmon and tuna), organ meats (such as liver), and whole grains. Although endogenous synthesis and dietary intake appear to provide sufficient CoQ10, tissue levels of CoQ10 decline with age.  Supplementation of 30-100mg daily can, therefore, provide many long term benefits for healthy adults, and therapeutic doses ranging from 100-300 mg can be especially beneficial for people.*
