What is CoQ10?

Coenzyme Q10, also known as ubiquinone, ubidecarenone, coenzyme Q, and abbreviated at times to CoQ10, CoQ, or Q10 is a natural antioxidant synthesized by the body. In general, coenzymes support enzymes in their various biochemical functions. CoQ10 is present in most eukaryotic cells, primarily in mitochondria, and is a vital participant in the chain of metabolic chemical reactions (electron transport chain) that generate energy in the form of ATP within cells. Ninety-five percent of the human body’s energy is generated this way. Therefore, those organs with the highest energy requirements—such as the heart, liver and kidney—have the highest CoQ10 concentrations.[1]

What are the benefits of CoQ10?

CoQ10 has been shown to support cardiovascular function and decrease the side effects caused by statins. One study showed a 40% decrease in pain severity in patients with myopathic symptoms by supplementation with 100mg CoQ10 daily.[2] Studies have demonstrated improved blood pressure, serum HDL-Cholesterol as well as LDL-C/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C ratios.[3] One study showed that due to its mitochondrial restoring and anti-oxidant properties, CoQ10 could have neuroprotective effects and improve cognitive function.[4] CoQ10 supplementation has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in people with Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis by decreasing biomarkers of inflammation like TNF-α.[5-7]

Why take CoQ10 supplements?

Primary dietary sources of CoQ10 include oily fish (such as salmon and tuna), organ meats (such as liver), and whole grains. Although endogenous synthesis and dietary intake appear to provide sufficient CoQ10, tissue levels of CoQ10 decline with age. This causes a decline in energy metabolism in many tissues, especially liver, heart, and skeletal muscle.[8] CoQ10 supplementation has shown an attenuation of age-related DNA damage and may also improve energy metabolism. Supplementation of 30-100mg daily can therefore provide many long term benefits for healthy adults, and therapeutic doses ranging from 100-300 mg can be especially beneficial for people with cardiovascular or neurodegenerative disease, diabetes and older people.[9]
