What is Fisetin?

Fisetin is a bioactive flavonol molecule found in fruits and vegetables such as strawberry, apple, persimmon, grape, onion, and cucumber at concentrations in the range of 2–160μg/g.[1] Fisetin was found to be one of the potent antioxidant flavonoids among the evaluated flavonoids.[2] It exerts multiple beneficial pharmacological activities such as anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, hypolipidemic and in rheumatoid arthritis.[3] Fisetin has shown anti-cancer activity in studies on cells and model animals conducted in laboratories.[4]

What are the Benefits of Fisetin?

  • Fisetin has been studied by researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies as a memory enhancer. Laboratory and animal studies have found that it protects and promotes the growth of brain cells and enhances memory in mice.[5]
  • It has been shown to maintain levels of glutathione (the primary antioxidant internal to most cells in the body) in the presence of oxidative stress.
  • Fisetin has been shown to affect multiple pathways involved in the maintenance of neuronal function during aging. It acts as an antioxidant, increases GSH, maintains mitochondrial function in the presence of oxidative stress, has anti-inflammatory activity against microglial cells, and inhibits the activity of 5-lipoxygenase, signifying that fisetin causes reduction in the age-related decline in brain function[2].
  • In addition, it has anti-inflammatory activity and inhibits the activity of lipoxygenases, thereby reducing the production of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids and their by-products. This wide range of actions suggests that fisetin has the ability to reduce the impact of age-related neurological diseases on brain function.[6]
  • It's proven ability toinhibit oxidation of harmful LDL cholesterol also indicates fisetin’s potential in preventing cardiovascular disease.[7]
  • Emerging data fromin vitro andin vivo studies indicate that fisetin possesses antiproliferative properties against several cancers.[1, 8, 9]
  • Fisetin-rich RVS extracts (Rhus verniciflua Stokes) have potential anti-platelet and anti-obesity activities and could be used as a functional food ingredient to improve blood circulation.[10]
  • Fisetinalso inhibits UVB-induced collagen degradation – a key factor in skin aging.[11]

Why Take Fisetin Supplements?

Although present in strawberries, fisetin is a relatively rare nutrient found only in minute quantities in the plant kingdom. Fisetin supplements serve as a convenient option to increase a daily intake of this flavonoid, which has memory enhancing, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-platelet and anti-obesity properties.[5, 6, 8-10] It also has potential in preventing cardiovascular diseases.[7]
