L-Serine is an amino acid essential for cognitive health, peaceful sleep, and as a building block for other amino acids.
Health Concerns:
Brain Health | Inflammation Management
Serine is an amino acid required for the synthesis of many proteins in our body. It plays an important role in many metabolic pathways and also acts as a precursor to several other amino acids. L-serine is a natural form of serine, and D-serine is another isomer that is synthesized in the body from L-serine.1 Although classified as a non-essential amino acid, serine is not synthesized in our bodies in sufficient quantities and therefore it is important to ingest it through diet and supplementation.2
Supports cognitive function
Serine can be used to combat age-related cognitive decline. According to a study published in Oncotarget in 2016, the administration of serine improved spatial memory, learning, and problem-solving in healthy older adults.3 Serine also improves mood and reduces anxiety-related behaviors.4 Similarly, ingesting L-serine induces antidepressant effects via different mechanisms related to serine metabolism in the brain.5
Promotes peaceful sleep
Peaceful and sound sleep is an important aspect of healthy living. Sleep deprivation not only affects us physically, but also slows down our brain activity and increases depressive symptoms. However, L-serine can help improve sleep patterns and limit nighttime awakenings. According to a study published in SpringerPlus in 2014, L-serine supplementation improved sleep quality and reduced the number of nighttime awakenings in healthy subjects, improving overall sleep patterns.6
Improves overall skin health
Amino acids are required for the synthesis of various skin proteins such as collagen. The epidermis of the skin acts as a barrier against the environment, through the differentiated keratinocytes (epidermal cells). Serine plays an important role in maintaining the physiological health of the skin by helping in the formation of the epidermal barrier and it also leads to terminal keratinocyte differentiation.7
Antioxidant effect
Oxidative stress occurs when free radicals that are generated in the body due to stress, pollution, UV rays, and harmful chemicals, bind to your healthy cells, causing them to damage and denature. According to studies, L-serine exhibits antioxidant and cytoprotective effects, and thus it helps attenuate age-related oxidative stress.8,9
Rejuvenation Therapeutics offers pure L-serine, a potent amino acid for your cognitive and skin health.
